August Awareness: Immunization

What Is Immunization?

Immunization is the action of making an individual immune to infection, usually via vaccination. Receiving a vaccine helps our bodies not get sick.

How Do Vaccines Even Work?

Natural Immunity

Human immune systems are concentrated around the concept of recognition. Almost everyone has experienced the uncomfortable cycle of contracting a disease, falling ill, and recovering. Eventually, our immune system produces antibodies: proteins that remember how to fight the same antigen or disease if it reoccurs in the body.

Then Why Do We Need Vaccines?

Vaccines train our bodies to develop immunity in the same way--but without making us sick. While some vaccines contain weakened pathogens, others such as the COVID-19 vaccine rely on biotechnologies like mRNA. Whichever form they take, vaccines are aimed to mitigate the dangerous spread and contraction of the disease in the process of advocating healthful societal living for all.
